Positional determination of the double bonds in fatty acyl chains of phospholipids using the EAD capabilities of the Zeno TOF 7600 system

Phospholipids play important roles in all living organism, in constituting biological membranes, serving as energy sources, and can be converted into physiologically active signaling molecules (i.e. eicosanoids and lysophospholipids). The number and position of double bonds in fatty acyl chains dictate their biological activities, e.g. membrane integrity and fluidity, which are important for human health.

This webinar will show how lipid structure can be characterized via electron activated dissociation (EAD), a technique where the singly charged lipid ions are irradiated by an electron beam, producing diagnostic product ions. EAD is evaluated using representative lipid standards and biological extracts and its fragmentation mechanisms are explored.
